Time to Kill Calculator

How long does this weapon really take to kill?

3.40 s

time to kill

4hits to kill
8shots fired, 1 reload
125damage per second

The clock starts on your first shot, so the shot that kills is not waited for.

Case study

Ok, I'm testing a new rifle for the team. How fast does it really kill? Let's work it out. The target has 100 health and every hit does 25, so that's 4 hits.

At 5 shots a second, it kills in 600 ms.

But nobody lands every shot. At 50% accuracy it takes 8 shots, and with a 6-round magazine I have to reload once. That makes it 3.40 seconds.

That's nearly six times as long, so the number on paper is nowhere near what players will feel.

Time to kill, or TTK, is how long a weapon takes to defeat a target. It decides which weapons feel strong in a shooter. Enter the target's health and the weapon's damage and fire rate to see how many hits and how many seconds it takes. Add accuracy and reloads for an answer closer to real play.

How it's worked out

  • Hits to kill is the target's health divided by the damage of one hit, rounded up.
  • Shots fired is the hits divided by your accuracy, rounded up.
  • Time is the gaps between shots: the shots minus one, divided by the shots per second. Any reload in the way adds its reload time.

A target with 100 health and a weapon doing 25 a hit needs 4 hits. At 5 shots a second that is 3 gaps of 0.2 seconds, so the time to kill is 0.6 seconds.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing weapons on damage per second alone. A weapon that needs one extra hit to kill is slower, even if its damage per second looks higher.
  • Counting from the wrong moment. Time to kill usually starts at the first shot, as it does here. Some guides count from when the weapon is raised, so check which one you are comparing.
  • Forgetting armour, headshots and damage that falls off with distance. Work each case out separately, using the damage that applies.
  • Assuming every shot hits. Try a lower accuracy and see how much the time changes.

Questions

What is time to kill?

It is how long it takes a weapon to kill a target, from the first shot to the one that kills. It is one of the main numbers used to compare weapons in shooters.

Why is the time not just shots divided by fire rate?

Because you do not wait after the shot that kills. Five shots at 5 a second have four gaps between them, so the time is 0.8 seconds, not 1.

How do I include headshots?

Use the damage of a headshot as the damage per hit, or work the body shot and the headshot out separately and compare them.

Is time to kill the same as damage per second?

No. Damage per second is how much damage a weapon does each second. Time to kill also depends on the target's health, because a kill needs whole hits.

Does this include armour or health that comes back?

No. It uses one damage number for every hit. If armour reduces your damage, enter the damage that gets through.
