About JustResearching
Free, practical tools for money, time and work, made by one person and kept simple on purpose.
What this site is
JustResearching.com is a collection of free online tools: calculators, checkers, converters and generators for everyday questions about money, time and work. Examples are the meeting cost calculator, the late payment interest calculators for the UK and the US, an invoice maker, a pay rise calculator and a working days calculator. There is no sign-up for any of them.
There are also a few games and interactive stories for when you want a break. They sit in their own sections and do not get in the way of the tools.
Why it exists
The idea is simple: free things that are genuinely useful, and free things that are just fun. A lot of the games here are old-school classics such as Snake, Solitaire and Minesweeper, and part of the reason for the site is nostalgia for them. The tools are meant to be simple and a little bit fun, but above all useful, the kind of thing that helps with a real question about work, pay, dates or everyday life.
The Indonesian version exists for two reasons. Students there are always looking for extra help. And more people in Indonesia are starting out in business: new startups, online sellers, freelancers and people running a small shop or stall. Many of them do their own sums, pricing and planning with no accountant to ask, and that is what spurred the site on to be made available in Indonesian. Free tools that ask for nothing, and games for when you need ten minutes to switch off, are one small way to help. The aim is real help and real relaxation, with nothing to sign up for.
The break-even calculator, the percentage calculator for margins and discounts, and the freelance day rate calculator are the sort of simple help meant for them.
What you will find here
There are 119 free tools in 9 groups: money and pay, time and dates, work life, quantities and measurement, writing, web tools, research and history, fun and decisions and gaming tools. There are also 20 games, from reaction and typing tests to classics like Snake and 2048, and a few interactive stories. The Indonesian version has 61 of the tools and 16 of the games, written for Indonesian readers rather than translated word for word.
Who makes it
I’m Samuel, a Brit living in Indonesia, and I build and look after this site on my own as a side project. It is not part of a company, and it is not owned by a bank, an accountancy firm or a software vendor, so no tool exists to push you towards a product.
How the tools work
Most tools run entirely in your browser, so what you type stays on your device and is not sent to me. A few look things up from public sources, such as Wikipedia, and say so on their page. Each tool page has a short section called “How we work it out” that explains the method in plain words, so you can check it against your own figures. Where a tool relies on official rules or rates, such as UK statutory interest, the page names where they come from.
The tools give estimates and general information. They are not financial, legal or tax advice. For anything that matters, check the official source or ask a qualified professional.
How the site pays for itself
The site is free to use. To cover the cost of running it, it may show advertising from third parties such as Google AdSense. Advertising never changes a tool’s result. You can read what data is involved on the privacy page.
Mistakes and suggestions
If a result looks wrong, a source has changed, or you want a tool that does not exist yet, please tell me on the contact page. Reports of errors are the most useful thing you can send, and I aim to fix them first.
