This tool calculates the end date of your probation period based on when you started and how long your probation lasts.
Probation periods are often quoted in months, which makes the exact end date less obvious than it sounds. This tool does the calendar maths and tells you the exact day, plus how many calendar and working days remain from today.
How we work it out
For week-based probations, we count forward by the exact number of days (weeks times 7, minus one day, since day one counts). For month-based probations, we go forward by the number of calendar months and take off one day, so a three month probation starting on 1 September ends on 30 November. If the later month is shorter, we use its last day first: 31 August plus six months lands on 28 February, so the probation ends on 27 February. For a probation counted in working days, we find the date of the Nth working day, skipping weekends and any holidays you choose, and counting your start date as day one if it is a working day. Working days remaining skips weekends and the holidays you chose.
How it's worked out
- For weeks, it counts forward by weeks times 7 days, and your first day counts as day one.
- For months, it goes forward by that many calendar months and takes off one day. If the later month is shorter, it uses that month's last day.
- For working days, it finds the date of the Nth working day, skipping weekends and any holidays you choose.
A 3-month probation that starts on 1 September ends on 30 November. A 6-month probation that starts on 31 August ends on 27 February in a year that is not a leap year, because February is shorter.

If it starts on Tuesday 1 September 2026, counting the first day as day one. A month ends on the day before the same date next month, or on the last day of a shorter month.
Common mistakes
- Using the day you accepted the offer as the start date. Use your first day at work.
- Not asking for feedback before the end. Don't wait for the last week to find out how it is going.
- Assuming it cannot change. Some employers extend probation, so check your contract.
Questions
What if I started on the 29th, 30th or 31st?
When the end month is shorter, we use its last day first and then take off one day. A six month probation starting on 31 August ends on 27 February. If your contract says it ends on a particular day, check with your employer.
Can I count probation in working days?
Yes. Choose working days and enter the number, for example 60. The end date is the 60th working day, skipping weekends and, if you choose, UK bank holidays or US federal holidays.
My contract counts from the day after I start. What then?
The result shows that alternative end date, one day later, or one working day later for a probation counted in working days. Use whichever your contract describes.
Does the start date count as day one of probation?
Yes. The probation period begins on your first day. If your contract specifies differently, see the alternative date shown under the result.
What happens at the end of the probation period?
Typically your employment continues under the full terms of your contract. Some employers issue a formal confirmation; others just let it pass. If you are unsure, check your contract or ask HR.
Can a probation period be extended?
Yes. If your employer extends your probation, enter the new end date manually by adjusting the length. Extensions must usually be agreed in writing.
