This tool calculates total pay when you have a mix of regular and overtime hours, using your hourly rate and overtime multiplier.

Useful for workers calculating a pay cheque with overtime, employers estimating payroll costs for a busy week, or anyone trying to work out whether those extra hours are actually worth it. Set your rate, your hours, and whether you're on time-and-a-half or double time.

How we work it out

Regular pay is your hourly rate multiplied by your regular hours. Overtime pay is your hourly rate multiplied by the overtime multiplier, then multiplied by your overtime hours. The two are added together for the total. All figures are gross, before tax.

Questions

What is time and a half?

Time and a half means your overtime rate is 1.5 times your regular hourly rate. If you earn $20/hr normally, your overtime rate is $30/hr. This is the most common overtime rate in the US.

Is overtime legally required in the US?

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, most non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5x their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Some states have additional rules. Exempt employees (typically salaried above a threshold) are not entitled to overtime under federal law.

What if my overtime rate is different?

Use the Custom option. Enter any multiplier, such as 1.25 for quarter-time overtime or 1.75 for a rate between time-and-a-half and double time.
