Right, I wonder how much of my day goes on bathroom breaks, and what that costs. I go about 2 times a day, and each trip takes around 10 minutes.
My salary is $60,000 a year, so that's about $28.85 an hour. So one trip is $4.81, and 2 trips a day is $9.62.
Over 250 working days, that's $2,403.85 a year, or $200 a month, for time I spend in there. That's a proper chunk of money for a few minutes a day.
And in time, it's 83 hours a year, which is about 10.4 working days.
That's a couple of weeks a year, but it's biology, not slacking.

How it's worked out
- Your hourly pay is your yearly salary divided by 52 weeks of 40 hours.
- One break is your hourly pay times the minutes in the break, divided by 60.
- A day is one break times the number of breaks. A year is a day times the working days in the year.
On $60,000 a year, your hourly pay is $28.85. A 5-minute break is worth $2.40. Four of them a day, over 250 working days, come to $2,403.85 a year.
Common mistakes
- Using the number to judge anyone's breaks, including your own. It is a bit of fun, not a measure of anything.
- Using your take-home pay when the tool wants your salary before tax.

Is this actually research?
Per the site name, yes. You are conducting important calculations about the economics of workplace bathroom behaviour. This is data-driven decision making.
Should I be optimising my bathroom break duration?
That is between you and your employer. We are simply providing the numbers. What you do with them is your business. Literally.
What about remote workers?
Remote workers have the additional advantage of home bathroom quality and no performance anxiety. The calculator works the same either way.
Does this mean I am paid to go to the bathroom?
In a way, yes. Your salary covers the whole working day, including the minutes you are away from your desk. The figure is a share of what you are already paid, not extra money.
