๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Tools for restaurant servers

Free tools for restaurant servers

Know what you really take home from every shift.

Serving is paid in two ways at once: a wage, and tips that change from table to table and night to night. That makes it hard to know what you really earn, what you will keep once you have tipped out the bar and the bussers, or which shifts are worth asking for. These tools turn those questions into numbers, with the working shown.

They are written for people new to serving, and they work in any currency. Tipping customs, tip-out rules and the law on tips differ a great deal between countries and restaurants, so the tools ask for your own rules and figures and never tell you what is allowed. In many places the law says tips belong to the staff, that pools can only include people who normally receive tips, or that a written policy is required, so check the rules where you work.

Questions

How much do servers make?

It depends on the country, the restaurant, the shifts and the tables. The server earnings calculator does the sum for your own wage, hours, sales and tip percentage, so you can try a cautious guess and a better one.

What is tipping out?

Passing on part of your tips, or a share of your sales, to the staff who help you, such as the bar, bussers, runners and hosts. How much, and how it is worked out, is set by each restaurant. The tip out calculator shows what you keep.

How do I split a tip pool fairly?

Use a rule everyone knows in advance. The two common ones are hours worked, and points for each role. The tip pool calculator does either, or both together, to the cent.

Do these tools tell me what the law says about tips?

No. The rules on who owns tips, who can share a pool and whether a written policy is needed differ by country and place, and they change. Check your local rules and your restaurant's policy.

Is anything stored or sent?

The calculators run in your browser, so what you type stays on your device. Your currency choice is remembered in this browser.

These are estimates and general information, not legal, tax or employment advice. Wages, tipping customs, tip-out and pooling rules, and tax on tips differ by country, state and restaurant, so use your own figures and your restaurant's written policy, and check the rules where you live.
