Free tools for homeowners and diyers

Know how much to buy and what it will cost, before you start your first project.

If you have never done a big job on your house, the first questions are practical. How much paint? How many tiles, with the ones that break? How much concrete for a slab, or gravel for a drain? What will the whole project cost once the small things are added up? And is it really cheaper to do it yourself? These tools answer those, with the working shown.

They are written for people new to DIY, and they work in metric or imperial and in any currency. You bring your own measurements, prices and quotes. The tools give estimates and general information, and they never tell you what your project needs by law. Rules on permits, building regulations and which work needs a qualified person differ by country and place, so check yours first.

Questions

I have never done a home project. Where do I start?

Start with the renovation budget calculator for your kind of project, so you see every cost before you spend. Then work out the quantities with the paint, tile, flooring or concrete calculators, and check whether DIY really saves you money.

Do these tools tell me what permits or building rules apply?

No. Rules on permits, building regulations and which work needs a qualified person differ by country and place, and they change. Check with your local authority before you start, especially for structural, electrical, plumbing and gas work.

Do they work in metric and imperial, and in my currency?

Yes. Choose metres, centimetres and litres or feet, inches and gallons, and pick a currency from the list. Your choices are remembered in this browser only.

Do they give prices for materials or labour?

No. Prices vary too much by place and time. The boxes show faint example numbers, and you type your own quotes and prices.

Is anything stored or sent?

The calculators run in your browser, so what you type stays on your device. Your unit and currency choices are remembered in this browser.

These are estimates and general information, not building, legal or professional advice. Costs, rules, permits and building regulations differ by country and place, so use your own figures and check the rules where you live. Structural, electrical and gas work should be done by a qualified person.
