๐ŸŒพ Tools for farmers

Free tools for farmers

Calculators for starting out, and for the sums a growing season throws at you.

If you are starting a small farm, a market garden or a homestead, or just thinking about it, the first questions are practical. What will it cost to get going? How many plants fit in the beds? How many hens do we need? How much will it earn at a market stall? These tools answer those, with the working shown.

They also scale up. Every calculator works for hectares as well as garden beds, so a bigger farm can use the same tools for seed rate, fertiliser, irrigation, costs and machinery. You bring the numbers from your own bags, labels, invoices and records. The tools give estimates and general information, and they never tell you what rate or timing to use, because that depends on your crop, soil, animals, weather and local advice.

Questions

I am just starting out. Where do I begin?

Start with the start-up cost calculator to see what it takes to get going and whether it can pay back. Then measure your plot, see how many plants fit, and work out what the beds could earn.

Do these tools tell me how much fertiliser or seed to use?

No. They work out the arithmetic for the rate you choose, such as how much product supplies a nutrient rate or how many seeds give a plant count. The right rate depends on your crop, soil tests, variety and local advice, so ask your local extension service or an agronomist.

Are they only for small plots?

No. They are written with beginners in mind, but every calculator works at any size, from a few garden beds to hundreds of hectares.

Do they work in hectares and acres?

Yes. The tools have a units choice for metric (hectares, kilograms, litres) or imperial (acres, pounds, gallons), and the land area calculator shows acres, hectares, square metres and square feet together.

Is anything stored or sent?

The calculators run in your browser, so what you type stays on your device.

These are estimates and general information, not agronomic, financial or professional advice. Rates, timings and costs depend on your crop, land, weather and local rules.
