How it's worked out
- A day is the price of one coffee times the number you buy.
- A year is a day times the working days you buy coffee. A month is that year divided by 12.
Two coffees at $4.50 is $9 a day. Over 230 working days that comes to $2,070 a year.
Common mistakes
- Only looking at the price of one coffee. The yearly total is what matters.
- Forgetting the extras that come with it, like a pastry.
- Making an all-or-nothing rule. Cutting back to a few days a week is easier to keep than stopping.
Questions
Should I include the cost of making coffee at home?
You can. If you brew at home before work, enter that cost per cup instead. The real comparison most people care about is bought coffee versus home coffee, and the difference is usually significant.
What about coffee subscriptions or office machines?
If your workplace provides free coffee, the cost per cup is effectively zero and the calculator becomes a record of how much you're saving. Enter 0 to confirm this.
How does it work out the monthly figure?
It takes your cost per day, multiplies it by the working days in a year and divides by 12.
What if I only buy coffee on some days?
Change the working days to the number of days you actually buy one, so the yearly total matches what you really spend.
