Deadlines, delivery times and notice periods are often given in working days, but a calendar shows every day. Pick a start date and an end date and this counts the days that are really worked, skipping weekends and, if you choose, UK bank holidays or US federal holidays.
How the count works
- It counts every day from the start date to the end date, including both.
- It takes off Saturdays and Sundays.
- If you pick a holiday calendar, it also takes off any holiday that falls on a weekday.
- What is left is the number of working days.

Monday to Friday, with no holidays taken off. Each public holiday that falls on a weekday takes one more off. A calendar year has 260 to 262 weekdays, depending on the year.
Common mistakes
- Promising a deadline in days without saying whether they are working days or calendar days.
- Forgetting public holidays. Pick the right holiday calendar, because they are not working days either.
- Counting both the first and the last day when only one should count.
- Assuming everyone works Monday to Friday.
Questions
Are the start and end dates included?
Yes. If both the start and end are working days, both are counted. If you want to exclude one of them, just move the date forward or back by one day.
Which holidays can it skip?
UK bank holidays for England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, taken from GOV.UK and including substitute days, or the US federal holidays. Local or company days off, such as an employer's closure days, are not included.
What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?
For UK bank holidays we use the substitute day GOV.UK lists, such as the Monday after when Boxing Day falls on a Saturday. For US federal holidays, a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after, so 4 July 2026 is skipped on Friday 3 July.
What if my dates go beyond the UK holiday data?
GOV.UK has published UK bank holidays up to the end of 2028 so far. Holidays outside that range are not counted, and the tool tells you when that applies.
Can I use this for other countries?
Not yet. Choose none to skip weekends only, then take off your own country's holidays by hand.
