Word count tells you how long something is. Page count tells you how long it feels.
A 2,500-word essay looks different at 12pt double-spaced (around 8-9 pages) than at 12pt single-spaced (around 4-5 pages). This tool uses your formatting choices to estimate how many A4 pages your content will fill, based on character width, line height, and margin dimensions.
How we estimate it
The calculator uses the selected font size to estimate characters per line, converts line spacing to line height in centimetres, and divides the available page area by the resulting line height. Word count is divided by the estimated words per page. The result is an approximation: actual page count can vary by font family, paragraph breaks, headings, and images.

Common mistakes
- Not matching the font, size and line spacing to the ones you will be using.
- Forgetting headings, tables and images take up room too.
- Counting the words in the references when they are not part of the limit.
Questions
Why does my actual page count differ from the estimate?
This tool assumes a standard paragraph flow with consistent font width. If your document has headings, bullet points, tables, images, or a font with wider or narrower characters than average, the real count will differ. The estimate is a useful starting point, not a precise measurement.
What font family does this assume?
The calculation uses an average character width based on a proportional serif font at the selected point size, similar to Times New Roman or similar academic essay fonts. Arial, Calibri, and other sans-serif fonts will produce slightly different results in practice.
What does "Normal (2.5 cm)" margins mean?
This corresponds to 1 inch (2.54 cm) margins on all sides, which is the Microsoft Word default and the standard for most academic submissions. The "Narrow" option mirrors Word's narrow preset at approximately 1.27 cm, and "Wide" uses approximately 3.81 cm.
How is the page count worked out?
It works out how many words fit on a line and how many lines fit on an A4 page, from your font size, line spacing and margins. Your word count is then divided by the words per page.

Real pages depend on the exact font, paragraph breaks, headings and images. Use it to plan, then check in your own document.
