Choose weight, volume or oven temperature, type an amount and its unit, and every other unit appears. It covers US and UK cups, spoons, fluid ounces and pints, and gas marks.
Recipes come from everywhere, and so do their measures. An American recipe asks for cups and fluid ounces, a British one for grams and gas marks, and an Australian one for metric cups. The conversions are exact for weight and volume, because they are defined by international agreement. Temperatures are different, because gas marks were never a precise scale, and charts round them differently. And remember volume is not weight: a cup of flour weighs much less than a cup of water, so a converter cannot turn cups into grams for you without knowing the ingredient.
How itโs worked out
- Weights are converted through grams: a pound is 453.59 grams and an ounce is 28.35 grams.
- Volumes are converted through millilitres. A US cup is 236.6 ml, a metric cup is 250 ml, and a UK pint is 568.3 ml.
- Temperatures use the standard formula between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
- Gas marks come from the common table, from 1/4 at about 110 degrees to 9 at about 240 degrees. Charts differ by a few degrees.
1 pound is 453.6 grams. 180 degrees Celsius is 356 degrees Fahrenheit, and about gas mark 4. 1 US cup is 236.6 millilitres, while a metric cup is 250.
Common mistakes
- Converting cups to grams without the ingredient. A cup of flour, sugar and honey all weigh differently, so use a weight from the recipe or a scale.
- Mixing up US and UK measures. A UK pint and fluid ounce differ from the US ones, and a US cup differs from a metric cup.
- Trusting a gas mark as exact. Different charts round it differently, and ovens vary, so check with an oven thermometer.
- Forgetting fan ovens. Fan ovens run hotter, and recipes often say to reduce the temperature, which is not a unit conversion.
Questions
How many grams are in a cup?
It depends on what is in the cup, because the cup measures volume and grams measure weight. Flour, sugar and water all weigh differently per cup, so use the weight the recipe gives or weigh the ingredient.
What is the difference between US and UK pints?
A UK pint is 568.3 ml and a US pint is 473.2 ml. Fluid ounces differ slightly too, so the tool lists them separately.
Why do gas mark charts differ?
The gas mark scale is a rough guide and charts round the Celsius and Fahrenheit values differently, sometimes by around ten degrees. Use the closest and check your oven.
Is a metric cup different?
Yes. Australia, New Zealand and Canada often use a 250 ml metric cup, while a US cup is about 236.6 ml. The tool shows both.
